My step grandfather believes he was born in Islington. He was known as George Henry Drury but he believed he was adopted but didn't know much information. Whether the Drury's took him in of whether Drury was his original name. The surname Faulkner was also mentioned. On his marriage certificate he lists his father as Richard John Drury. George's death certificate lists a date of birth of 26 April 1911 but he maintains he was born the year before in 1910. He never had a birth certificate and when he went to get his pension he realised that his birth was not registered (or it may have been registered in a different name). George had a death certificate in his belongings of an Elizabeth Drury died Islington 21 Feb 1946, wife to George Drury (Builder) died age 82 - possibly his grandmother? Any advice on trying to find anything out on his would be greatly appreciated.

It said "wife" to George, not widow so I think that would indicate George was still alive?

Sarah

Sarah Report 4 Jun 2012 08:31

Sorry it said: "widow of george drury (a builder)".

Thanks for Louisa Flood info - I will look in to that.

Do you have an occupation for Richard? Might be worth looking for him 1911.

Sarah Report 4 Jun 2012 08:50

I've tried the 1911 and have not come up with anything useful at all. On the marriage certificate for George Henry Drury it lists "Richard John Drury (Deceased)"

I've also tried 1911 for an Elizabeth and George but nothing for London area comes up.

Have looked at Electoral Registers and Louisa F Flood is shown at 12 Union Square from 1945 to at least 1960 - cannot find any later entries Ancestry. She had the following people living at the same address: Emily Foley, Doris V Jones, Emily J Jones and Henry Jones and later also a Henry C Jones and Francientte P Jones.

Interestingly, my grandmother who married George Henry Drury was Peggy Sylvia Jones.

?? This Richard was born in 1876, Hackney - he was in London on all census 1881-1901, and shows up in Lincs in 1911 the occupation ties up with previous census.

Just been looking in to L F Flood. The one mentioned above was born c 1891. No L F Flood born around then so clearly she got married. Found a Louisa F Cooke married to James W Flood in 1915 Islington. There is a Louisa Frances Cooke born 1891 Chelsea so that looks like her. Found her on the census and her mother was Louisa Job who married George Frederick Cooke and then later Richard Hardy Bills. Richard Hardy Bills had been married previously too and had a child called Richard Hardy Bills - I'm wondering whether he could actually be the father to George Henry Drury.

Has anyone in your family any knowledge of George Henry Drury's parents?
Have you spoken to your parents or uncles or aunts?
Who registered his death in a different year to the one you were told?

The L Flood information is interesting.
Depends how much you want to spend on certificates..

I had forgotten about the Faulkners. Any further information?

Sarah

Sarah Report 4 Jun 2012 11:45

My family know nothing about his parents. George thought his father was Richard John Drury. Some rumour of the surname Faulkner and mother possibly fled to Canada? We wondered whether Faulkner was the mother's name but have searched for George Faulkners too and nothing comes up for that year. Also rumoured that his father died when George was young which is why he was "adopted" He believed he was born in Islington. George Henry Drury had no brothers and sisters that he was aware of.

As for George Henry Drury's death record, either his wife or daughter registered his death and used the date of birth he was given by his family but he always said he had been born the year before at the time of the coronation or jubilee or something like that.

Been looking in to the Flood and Bills family more and have found Elizabeth Drury living with Richard Hardy Bills Snr and Louisa Bills in 333 New North Road, Islington in 1921 - 1930 then a Henry Richard Drury joins them there. The Bills die and Elizabeth Drury and Henry Richard Drury remain living there until 1937

Sarah Report 4 Jun 2012 16:27

Just spoke to my mother and she said that George recalled growing up with two twin "brothers" although not for very long. Possiblt Faulkners? I did a quick search and found a Frederick W Faulkner and Joseph H Faulkner born Islington 1915, mother's maiden name of Gilby. There is a Gilby/Faulkner marriage in Islington 1912 between William Faulkner and May Lillian Gilby but so far I cannot see any connection to the Drury's.

MarieCeleste Report 4 Jun 2012 17:20

Wonder what the maiden name was of Elizabeth Drury who died in 1946?

Do you know anything else about her husband?

Sarah

Sarah Report 4 Jun 2012 17:40

Unfortunately I have no idea what Elizabeth's maiden name is. I've looked for marriages between George Drury and an Elizabeth in London and came up with:
1)George Edward Drury & Elizabeth Brigman St Saviour Sep 1877
2)George Drury & Elizabeth Rowley Platts Woolwich Jun 1894
3)George Thomas Drury & Elizabeth Buckenham Bethal Green Sep 1904

None of these maiden names ring any bells.
As for her husband George, I know he was a builder and that he had died by 1846 - only the information from Elizabeth's death record.

I was having a look in to the Henry Richard Drury who was living with Elizabeth on the electorals later on in life and may have linked him to a Drury family in Brighton. There is a Henry Richard Drury b Brighton in 1863 and he had a brother called George Frederick Drury b1852 so I'm wondering if that's him or not. Only thing is he married two other women in Brighton and died in Brighton. In 1911 he is in Brighton listed as married but no wife living with him and I have found an Entry for an Elizabeth Drury in 1911 living in Islington listed as married but no husband living with her.
