Clou Report 8 Oct 2007 22:33

I was thinking maybe try the electrol roll for those sisters?

Tina Report 8 Oct 2007 23:00

I've been reading your thread with interest. One thought! Does your Dad know the name/s of the childrens home he was in. Maybe they would have some kind of record/ file on him which might give some insight into why he was placed there. Maybe it would also give info on his possible sisters?? If he doesn't know the name of the home then maybe the local county council could help?

Managed to find a birth for Herbert James Sloper and confirmed his dad was a gardener. He is listed as being born in Merton in 1886. Someone has him in her tree on this site. Might be worth contacting her.

This could be Henry Sloper's marriage:-

Name: Henry Sloper
Year of Registration: 1883
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Shoreditch
County: London, Middlesex

On the same page is a Katherine Phillips.

Rose, I took a look at this other person - do you suppose she is one of the sisters?

Dionne, just thinking aloud here - did you buy the 1930 marriage cert of Livermore to Sloper in Bromley?

Mottingham borders the boroughs of Greenwich and Bromley (also a little bit of it in borough of Lewisham) . Also I noticed Jean 1934 was born Woolwich which comes under Greenwich borough.

I hope someone can find a marriage for you for either Jean or Judith. Fingers Crossed.

Just going back to Wayne's idea about the newspaper ad. The local newspaper is called the Newsshopper, a free paper that is delivered. Let me know if you want the website.

But, I noticed that the younger daughter was born in Willesden which I think is in North London, so it seems the family moved away from South East London.

Dionne Report 9 Oct 2007 16:28

Good afternoon all.
Thankyou for your replies.

Rose..... I have done a search on the trees and cant find any names listed.Would you mind telling me exactly what you typed in.

Selena. On the marriage certificate is does say Bromley. It is a good idea about the local newspaper but I am a little worried about posting a message in it as I dont want to upset anyone.I still really dont have any guarentee that my father did have these two sisters.

As for the childrens homes. My father was sent to Shaftberry mother wrote on his behalf twicw and we still havenot had any reply.
my father then went to a home in grenwich and all the records were destroyed in a fire so no luck there.

I was thinking of obtaining the two girls birth certificates but do you think that would really help in solving the mistery?.

I was also going to try and find information on my fathers uncle Henry L Sloper and his Aunty Katherine.Purhaps they both got married and had siblings. You never know my father just might have some cousins out there somewhere and a family apart from his wife and children he can call his own.

I am really greatful and thankful for whatever help and assistance you can give me in making one of my fathers dreams a reality.
MAny thanks

At the top of the page is a quick search. type in Herbert Sloper , Click "search " and it will take you to others with him in their tree. The person who has him in their tree is called Jean. A coincidence or perhaps one of your dads siblings?

Dionne Report 9 Oct 2007 16:46

Hi Brenda.

Just did the search and it worked for me this time.I have sent jean a message so fingers crossed. I noted that her name was Pothecary. Wondering if it was worth doing a search for that name to see if she married and her maiden name was livermore.or do you think it would be best to wait and see if I hear from her

Tillot Report 9 Oct 2007 18:17

Hi Dionne,

I've been reading your thread with interest.

I noticed there's no entry for a Jean Sloper, other than your own. If the lady you have contacted is your fathers sister, then I would have thought she was adopted and would have married in her adopted surname. Which is why there's no entry for a Jean Sloper.

Hope that makes sense!

I wouldn't rule out the possibilty of the birth someone else has found before Dorothea married as well.

Good luck
Helen x

Dionne Report 9 Oct 2007 18:35

Hi Helen

Thankyou for your comment.

I havenot heard anything yet from the message I sent to jean.Fingers crossed that I get a reply.
As for the daughter my grandmother might have had before her marriage,I have searched for further information on her aswell but as with the other two girls all I can find is the birth and then the trail goes cold.If these girls were my dads sisters then I think they must all have been adopted.I dont really know where to go from here and I am now getting a

this other member Jean has, in her tree,

Katherine Phillips
Henry Sloper(senior)
Henry Sloper
Katherine Sloper
Herbert Sloper

These are all the people from the census that has been submitted on your thread. She has to have a connection somewhere!

Dionne Report 9 Oct 2007 18:53

Oh brenda WOW!!

I feel so close to solvong this yet so far away.I do hope she replies to me.How do you know the other names are on her tree.Did you do a tree search?
Thankyou Thankyou

Moody Blue Report 9 Oct 2007 19:00

Dionne, I just put the surname Sloper in the quick search and looked for any entries listed by the name Jean. Then tried katherine Phillips.I noticed that there are two females listed by a Jean with births in 1973 & 1974 in the name Pothecary. If you look their birth references up you will find the mothers maiden name. If this is the same Jean, maybe this could provide a clue?

Clou Report 9 Oct 2007 19:17

Oh I do hope Jean contacts u!.

Keeping my fingers crossed for u.

Dionne Report 9 Oct 2007 19:17

Hi Selina

I have emailed Jean again explaining the other names.I to really hope she gets in contact with me.As soon as she does I will let you all know.
