Can I ask... does anyone else have stories they have started... lots of 'first pages' and nothing complete?

I sent one to Stella and Maggie earlier...and then looked at another two, and there are more.... :(

I have the beginnings of a novel I have started Rose, why do you ask?

Rambling

Rambling Report 14 Jan 2010 22:53

Jen, only because I am sat here surrounded by 'beginnings' ! and reading them (some of which I wrote 20 years ago) I can see where i intended to go with them ...but never went lol.
Not short stories , the first pages of 'novels'....

I believe I drafted three totally different beginnings of stories before Miriam took me over, Rose, I suppose you have to keep plowing on until something grabs you, no matter how trivial:-) BCXX

Know that feeling well Rose, I started this one at least 2 years ago, have about five or six pages and know where I want to go with it, it's just finding the time to get me there lol!

I have a few short stories I have written over the last couple of years, and two incomplete novels, one reached 46,000 words before it faltered and ground to a halt, but that's because I brought in some other characters I didn't need, and now I've got to delete 10,000 words to be rid of the nosey busybodies LOL. Now that's hard, because I've got to kill them and send then back to the void of non-existence from whence they came, and give the jobs they did to the existing characters. This also means I have to get rid of the graveside punch-up which I was pleased with, and was totally 'in the zone' when I wrote it. Damn!

Anyway, I may send one of the shorts around soon, to see what you all think, once we get going on the second wave, which will give me a little more time for my latest one to be polished.

I did the NaNoWriMo in November Rose, only for myself as an exercise, to see if I could be disciplined and dedicated enough. The idea being to write 50k in 30 days, which, when you break it down is just 1700 a day. Couple of hours and I had it done.

BUT....you just let your imagination flow, almost in a childlike way, and see what happens. I did have a plan, I had an idea where the story was going to go, but I left it to my characters to get there step by step. It was fun. No editing, no going back, just keep going until the 50k are done. Well I almost got there LOL Good start for a first draft though.

That's a lot of words ! the most I have done was 10, 000 for my 'long study', but that was factual so much easier than building plot and characters.

It's not productive for my course-work, I'm supposed to be doing non-fiction LOL.

it would be nice if we can alternate a little between fiction and non-fiction and poetry , just try our hand at each and see if we have hidden talent for something we've not tried before :)

Good idea Rose, and different genre's within fiction too, from romance, historical, supernatural, crime etc. eventually. Who knows? we might all discover something about ourselves by giving it a go.

Love that idea Rose, we want plenty of variety. I'm waiting for some good old critisim on my two installments. I need to know if you think it's getting bogged down in any way or going off track too much, I know one or two of you seem happy with it so far but I do have a tendancy to meander a little. Bad, bad habit! lol!
