Hi Derek,
Thank you for all the information you have sent me on Samuel Hand and Hannah Wigley. I would really like to see the info you have on the children/grand children.
Thank you Sue

Derek Report 20 Jan 2010 17:13

nudge up for kathleen re. Mary Tattersill

Derek Report 30 Jan 2010 21:01

Susan.........bad news.......SAMUEL i suspected was not very nice..........He was transported on the "William Hammond" in 1836 for life to Australia...........I will PM you with his offence.........

Derek Report 1 Feb 2010 13:40

Hello again Sue..........I think we can now put this lot to bed...........forget the transportation red herring.

SAMUEL HAND born Leek Staffs 01.01.1786 son of WILLIAM and MARTHA

He married HANNAH WIGLEY of Kniveton 1820.(daughter of JOB).....They had ONE child SAMUEL baptised 19.10.1821 who died 10 months later.

This was their only child!! because hannah had previously 02.02.1819 produced the illegitimate HENRY WIGLEY whilst she was still a spinster.

Thus the descendants of Hannah Hand (nee Wigley) were always WIGLEY and not HAND
SAMUEL senior was not transported in 1856 because he died in 1843!!
1851 Census shows HANNAH HAND Widow living with henry and his first three children.

She subsequently reassumned her maiden name..and is buried at Kniveton as Hannah Wigley aged 92 buried 04.10.1882.

more later

Derek Report 1 Feb 2010 14:01

Sue.further to my posting below:

HENRY WIGLEY married ANN(HANNAH) WINT at Kniveton 21.12.1840 by Banns........Ann was born 25.08.1819 at Wirksworth daughter of Samuel and Ann (she was batised 09.09.1821

Their children were......Hannah 1842/Martha 1847/Henry 1850 / Mary 1851 / Harriet 1856.

Henry junior married SARAH WATSON and had seven children between 1882 and 1902.if you want details let me know..after that we get into living relatives....which i can PM you if you like.
Although the Wigleys moved back to Staffordshire in the 1870' (Fenny Bentley near Ashbourne) and then to Osmaston Derby..there are still a large number in Kniveton....

cane Report 1 Feb 2010 14:39

Susan Report 2 Feb 2010 16:23

Hi Derek,
Quite a lot of information to take in but thanks to you I can now understand what happened. I come down the line from Harriet 1856 and she married into the Webster's who also lived Kniveton. I would be interested in the info on Henry Junior and Sarah's children/relatives.

Thanks Sue

Derek Report 2 Feb 2010 18:09

Derek Report 2 Feb 2010 18:22 must start in the message below:

George Froggatt 1657 married ANNE ALLCOCK at Ashbourne 10.06.1681

They had TEN can have them if you want..but for now the eldest was WILLIAM 1681 (at Ashbourne)..who married ALICE HAUKESWORTH 1706

Their SIX children included THOMAS FROGGATT 1723 who married ANN BIRCH..four children including GEORGE FROGGATT1746..who married ANN BRADBURY at Hayfield Glossop and had:

JOHN 1777

George Froggatt had two wives..the first ANN whom he had three children 1797 1799and 1802.....before he married HANNAH FURTON and had three more children including our JOSEPH 1812...the rest you know.......

There are several other strings to the earlier children and their marriages.but thats' HARD work

All the best

Derek Report 4 Feb 2010 10:15

Good morning Sue..HENRY of Hannah Martha Mary and your Harriet..married SARAH WATSON at Kniveton of the witnesses was HARRIET (Now WEBSTER)

Henry at been one of the witnesses at the wedding of HARRIET and THOMAS WEBSTER 17.03.1880 as was his sister Mary Wigley.

Henry and Sarah Watson had EIGHT children:

Sarah 1882 Olive 1884 Alice 1885..all at Parwich

By 1891 they were back in Leek Staffs where they had Hannah 1892 (died 1964) Frank 1894 and George 1895

For some reason they are back in Kniveton for the births of Thomas 1899 and Nellie 1902, who are in the Kniveton records.

Thomas 31.12.1899 and nellie 28.12.1902

You presumably have researched the family of Harriet?

Pam Report 4 Feb 2010 11:26

Hi Derek

So sorry to hear your thread has been deleted with so much work on it.

Please could you check your records for the birth of

Arthur (Lewis) Powney born 1880 Burton upon trent. Derbyshire.

Derek Report 4 Feb 2010 12:20

Hello pam...nice to hear frr4om you again..I think most of my previous adherents have found my new thread......pity that all the previous work is no longer on record..However.......

I can't find the baptism of Arthur powney yet because Burton-on-Trent is in Staffordshire not Derbys...although it might have been at one time..GENUKI says it is definitley divided from Derbyshire by the River Trent. Anyway it was a Staffordshire family..This is what i have found:-

WILLIAM POWNEY married HANNAH BRADLEY in 1836 Sedgeley Staffs. They had SIX children between 1837 and 1850.John died 1853

One of those children was JOHN POWNEY b 1837 Sedgley Staffs..who married EMMA FERRIS 1873

They are the parents of your of three children:

EDITH 1877

These three childen are on the 1891 Census with their parents..but can find no other sign of Arthur Lewis...the family moved to Prestwich near Salford lancs by 1901.

That's all i've got at the moment..but you know me..I keep looking!!

All the best

Pam Report 4 Feb 2010 12:43

Hi derek

Thank you for looking for arthur Powney for me
lt did have on the census Derbyshire but l forgot how these places change county every now and then.

l have the Powney's on census from 1841-1911 except for William on the 1871 born to William and Hannah.
Could you tell me the name of the youngest child as l have bene given David born 1850 and Daniel 1854
The surname varies so much from Powney-Poney-Pountney to even Perny on the 1881.
l also have marriage certs of John and Emma and their son John Henry. arthur's older brother.
l have never been able to find out what happened to Arthur.
My husbands father died in the early 80s and of course l only started researching in the late 90s.
Thank you for all your effort and time
Kind regards

Susan Report 5 Feb 2010 16:26

Marilyn Report 8 Feb 2010 09:01

Hi Derek

Just a reminder about my search for the parents of John Waterhouse and Grace Hobson, parents of Grace Waterhouse born in Hayfield, 20 Aug 1804. Hope you can find something for me.

Derek Report 10 Feb 2010 21:27

Hi Karen (Hyland)........thanks for access to your tree...there's a load i can fill in for you, including parents for John Gould and Martha Doughty..

Derek Report 10 Feb 2010 21:28

Hello Marilyn....will try to find the appropriate gaps in the Hayfield Registers when i next go to Matlock Records Office.

Patricia Report 11 Feb 2010 14:07

Thanks Derek - I think that i've sussed all that out. I shall look forward to receiving any further info. you find on Ann Alsop. She eventually became the midwife (unofficial, I suspect) for Parwich. I don't knpw if that helps!
Are you able to find out anything for the borough of Derby?
Thanks again

Derek Report 11 Feb 2010 19:47

Hi Patricia....depends what you want..the Derby records are in several different Parishes.hit me with what you need and I'll have a look.

Patricia Report 12 Feb 2010 10:45

Hi Derek!
OK - I'm trying again.

I'll look forward to hearing from you again with any message about Ann Alsop.

Are you able to find out anything about Derby Parish registers? My mother's relations are mainly from the town although her father was born in Lenton. I've hit a brick wall with one of her 2nd cousins, surname Ashby.

Thanks for your patient help!!
