Hi Rose

Privacy Act laws in Australia apply to everyone, though each states differs with access dates. It is to protect living people.

Most of the time my successful 'finds' are people with much earlier bdms. A birth in the 1930s is really relatively recent in genealogy terms.

If you Google NLA Trove newspaper and put his name into the main search box you should get a 'hit' for the article I mention. Could be a coincidence of course but does fit your dates given.

There is also an article which may be about his father, given th new info you have provided, regarding police promotions in South Australia, on Friday 21 Sept 1951 in The Advertiser:
"Third Class Inspector W. Ridland was appointed second class inspector in the mounted division." There is an article stating he was transferred to Mount Gambier in 1950, where he was in charge of the South-East Division, which also fits.

Trove also has a Photograph of Police Inspector W. Ridland taken in Mt Gambier in 1964.

Let me know if you have trouble finding it :)

Happy New Year!

Cherilyn Report 1 Jan 2012 08:22

Rose, I have had another look given this new info about a possible match for W. Ridland as father of Stuart.

*Possible* marriage in 1933 of William RIDLAND (son of Wm of Broughton, Edinburgh, Scotland) to Lily Jane DUNMORE on 3rd June 1933 at St Mary's Edwardstown, SA. Then two births - Bruce Alan in 1934 and a daughter in 1935. Can't see another in 1937 but sometimes they are elusive. Stuart being in Mount Gamiber in the 1950s fits with the transfer of his father above to that area at that time.

So my suggestion is to contact the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier, where Bruce appears to be an active member. At least he will be able to tell you if you are on the right track, or not. Address is PO Box 1054, Mount Gambier, SA, 5290. If you go to the White Pages online (www.whitepages.com.au/wp) and do a residential search for B Ridland in South Australia you will find his home details as well.

Amazing how one small piece of new information can help so much! Hope this is a hit, let me know :-D

Cherilyn,

Would you be able to find out anything from the local papers in Geelong about my Mother's Cousin who died in 2010?

His name is Derek John Cartwright he would be about 77 yrs old.

I know little more about him. He was born in Kidderminster, England.

Thanks from Alan.

Cherilyn Report 4 Jan 2012 03:09

Hi Alan

Here is his immigration, from NAA Recordsearch:

CARTWRIGHT Derek John born 5 April 1933; Patricia (nee Quarmby) born 8 March 1941; Paul Andrew born ***; Adrian Christopher born ***; Tracey Jane born ***; travelled per CANBERRA departing Southampton on 22 May 1969 under the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme

There is a death notice online:
CARTWRIGHT. - Derek John. Peacefully at Geelong Hospital on Dec. 10, 2010. Aged 77 years. Dearly loved father of Paul, Adrian and Jane. Father-in-law of of Susan, Anna, and Wayne. Adored grandfather of Daniel, Jack, Mikayla, Joshua, William and Liam. Rest in Peace.

It appears Patricia may have died in 1998.
CARTWRIGHT Patricia Death notice 07OCT1998 Death at Geelong The Age (Melbourne) 10OCT1998

If you go to http://www.whitepages.com.au/, and do residential searches, there is an A Cartwright in Colac, and a PA Cartwright in Highton, both in Geelong region. Certainly the PA is a good possibility for son Paul.

Do let me know how you go! :-)

Nala Report 5 Jan 2012 18:52

Hello again Cherilyn,

One of my Ancestors from England had a daughter Aileen Shuard 1940-1989. The family settled in Western Australia.

Would you be able to find out any dates / places etc for me please?

The father was Geoffrey Sheward/Shuard and the mother was Aileen (O'leary).

Thanks from Alan S :-)

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 6 Jan 2012 03:02

Are you sure about the parents of Aileen? This seems to be her burial, at Pemberton cemetery:
SHUARD , Aileen Anne. 20 Sep 1940 - 15 May 1989

In the same cemetery is:
SHUARD , Alice Dorothy and infant son. 11 April 1929
SHUARD , Geoffery. 30 Oct 1924 - 21 Apr 2005. Husband of Enid, father of Vicki, Max, Richard and Philip

Things are complicated by the fact there were 2 Geoffrey SHUARDs in WA around the time, believe it or not! The above Geoffrey was born 30 Oct 1924 in Pemberton and died 21 April 2005, son of Geoffrey and Alice Dorothy (also above). Alice died in childbirth in 1929 with twins, one (Albert) stillborn and one (William) died soon after.

This Geoffrey (1924-2005) married Enid May HACKETT in 1947. He had a twin named Roy (1924-?), and a brother Victor Wm (1922-2003).

Things are further complicated by the arrival on 13 July 1922 of a Mr G SHUARD with a Mrs A SHUARD on 'Borda'. Now, Geoffrey SHUARD married Alice D BLYTHE in Elham, Kent in 1921 (Jun 2a/2468).

Geoffrey SHUARD married Aileen O'LEARY in the East Murchison district of WA in 1932 (reg 18). Is this a 2nd marriage for the Geoffrey who married Alice (d. 1929) in the UK in 1921?

This is your Geoff's WWII enlistment:
SHUARD GEOFFREY : Service Number - W30761 : Date of birth - 07 Feb 1899 : Place of birth - LONDON ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - BUNBURY WA : Next of Kin - SHUARD AILLEEN

and the other Geoffrey:
SHUARD GEOFFREY : Service Number - WX41293 : Date of birth - 05 Jul 1924 : Place of birth - SUBIACO WA : Place of enlistment - IN THE FIELD : Next of Kin - SHUARD GEOFFREY

In 1934, Geoff Shuard was a welder at Wiluna Gold Mine (which fits with him marrying in East Murchison district) in 1932. In late1947, a Geoff Shuard was advertised as a panelbeater and welder in the Geraldton newspaper. By 1948 it appeared he had his own premises at 24 Durlacher St, Geraldton.

Burials at Geraldton Cemetery:
SHUARD , Aileen Frances. 3 Mar 1908 - 1 May 1999.
SHUARD , Geoffrey Gordon. 28 Jan 1956 aged 56 [death reg states aged as 57, son of Wm & Anne]

So I guess it all fits in the end! Hope this makes sense! ;-D

P.S. Again, if you go to the White Pages online I suspect the EM Shuard in Donnybrook is the late Geoffrey jnr's wife and the R in Perup a good possibility for their son Richard.

Cherilyn Report 9 Jan 2012 07:06

Sue, if the spelling is definitely KELLET with one T, there is only one J Kellet in NSW listed in the White Pages telephone directory ( J R in Matraville).

LOTS of Kelletts though.

Privacy Act laws do not allow access to marriages as 'recent' as 1966, sorry.

Do you know what her previous married/maiden name was/were?

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 9 Jan 2012 07:08

Hi Christine

Best bet is the Ryerson Index, though mainly for NSW, some Qld and Vic. This is searchable online (Google it) and you can request death or funeral notice lookups from volunteers on the site.

If you know the state and area you can check cemeteries, many have online databases that are searchable.

If you would like me to try and find it, I will need a name please ;)

Cheers
Cherilyn
