Does anyone know how e-bay works??

There seem to be people bidding for items worth hundreds of pounds and the bid might be at £20 or so - does that mean if you put in a last bid of say £30, you can have that item?

What is the catch?

Are you likely to receive something that doesn't work ??

Dea,

Ebay works just like any auction. The highest bid wins the item unless the seller has placed a reserve price below which the item is not sold even though there has been bids made for it.

"Are you likely to receive something that doesn't work ?" That is always a possibility which is why it is important to read the items description carefully and to know what the sellers returns policy is before deciding whether or not to bid for an item.

Whilst there are definitely bargains to be had it is important to remember the statement, "You usually get what you pay for." as is the statement, "If it looks too good to be true, it usually is."

It is a case of Caveat Emptor (Buyer beware).

Nothing really Ginns - I was just curious!

I have to buy a digital keyboard for my grand-daughter as she has just started piano lessons at school and has been told she needs a piano or keyboard at home to practice on !

I believe I have decided on the correct keyboard for her which is about £170.

Having been told that there are often bargains on e-bay I went to have a look and saw this !!! :-0

This would cost many hundreds in the shops - it is a 'whole' piano size! - the one I am buying is just the keyboard, not in a piano-type stand !!

I am still going for the one I decided on though but It made me curious.

Dea,

Just for the record that does not seem a bad item.

The seller has a good reputation as a seller on Ebay. If you look you will see that he has a "Feedback" rating of 452 with 100% positive that means that 452 other Ebay users have either bought from him or sold to him and have all given him positive feedback indicating that they were pleased with the transaction.

The item is to be collected from his home in Ipswich by the successful bidder meaning that the buyer will be able to see and possibly try out the item before handing over the cash. There is no reserve so the item will be sold to the highest bidder when the auction closes on Sunday.

It looks in reasonable condition so if bought for £50-60 should be a bargain.

Yeah !!! - That's what I thought Jonesey! - I looked at all those things (no reserve and seller's reputation etc.)

I won't be buying it as I am miles from Ipswich so it is just not practical but perhaps I will keep an eye on what happens for future reference and 'possible' use of the site ;-)

OOOhhh - I was wrong - this would not cost many hundreds of pounds in the shops, in fact it is only about £150 new.

I have been looking at Yamaha keyboards which are obviously much more expensive - this make is obviously very cheap ! - Looks good though !! ;-)

Not a chance was it new. When it came, it had a tear and dirt around the hem, but she did get her money back..err, my money!
