Good morning and thank you for the porridge Sylvs.......much appreciated. :-D

Hi Renes.......~~~~~~

It's quite pleasantly cool here and there is a hint of rain in the air.

Re cleaning the bins - I actually get a kick out seeing my freshly washed bins standing neatly in a row..........such a sad person I am..... :-D

That's something you can look forward to doing in your retirement Gins.......washing your bins out personally!! :-D :-D :-D :-D

Off for a browse and then pick up daughter later and go for lunch. ~~~~

Dea Report 2 Aug 2013 09:42

Interestingy Cynths - When we first got our wheelie bins we were instructed that we were not allowed to wash them ourselves because we could not put the used water into the drains :-0

There were also instructions in the local newspaper stating the same thing and that we MUST use a specialised firm of cleaners to do this job for us - they would take away the used water and dispose of it in the correctly authorised way !

I must admit though, I do do them myself in 'secret' .......SHhhhhhhh.............. Don't tell ! ;-)

Only people with dirty bins wash them (Or have them washed).

As we have a waste disposal unit installed in one of the kitchen sinks any food waste including any food left on the plate ends up going down that. Any tins or glass jars that contained food are thoroughly washed out and well drained before being put into the outside recycling bin along with any dry packaging materials. Non-recyclable household waste is first put into a waste bin which always has a bio-degradable liner bag inside. In due course this bag is removed, sealed and put into the outside general waste bin.

The result is that nothing likely to cause a sticky, smelly mess ever ends up in the bins so there is no need to wash them out, they are as clean inside today as they were when they were first delivered.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. :-)

Our local council provide a Stirling waste disposal service. Every week (In our case every Monday) we get our general and recyclable items bins emptied by 2 separate lorries/teams and from early Spring to late Autumn a third lorry/team empties the garden refuse bin once a fortnight. Even public holidays do not disrupt the routine as the council always pays the workers eye wateringly high bonus payments to work on Bank Holidays.

Dea

Dea Report 2 Aug 2013 11:00

I too seal all my waste in plastic bags Jonesey so the bin is always clean but as our waste is only collected every fortnight, the bins do sometimes get rather 'smelly', especially in this hot weather so a little 'freshen up' is often called for ;-)

Jonesey

Our food waste bin is emptied every week al food bagged in
bio-degradable bag.
We also recycle glass, cans newspapers and plastics which are collected either fortnightly or monthly.

Our non recyclable waste is also bagged before going into the wheelie bin and is collected fortnightly. Garden waste is collected in the same wheelie bin as the food waste.

So our bins are not dirty or sticky but as Dea says they can get smelly so we like to have them cleaned regularly. It's the same as you kitchen bin which I am sure everyone has a liner in.

You wouldn't never wash it out would you?

Renes

Thank you Dea Dearest ......

Cynthia Report 2 Aug 2013 16:17

Our bins are collected on alternate weeks in rotation. - we have never been advised to use a professional cleaner.

All my general waste IS bagged.

All my food waste IS securely bagged in the bio-degradable bags provided (we don't have the luxury of a waste disposal thingey.

This bin is also used for any garden waste, so there can often be loose leaves and soil which stick at the bottom.

My plastics, glass and cans are ALL washed before going in the brown bin.

All newspapers and magazines go into the blue bin. It never requires washing.

I also clean the outside of the bins too.

My bins rarely smell but I prefer to err on the side of caution.

You seriously didn't think that us girls were just throwing trash directly into our bins :-P

You obviously have no sense of smell dear boy

Our garbage pick-up system has just changed .............

Now they pick up every week .............

the garden trimmings and compost bin ............. it contains all our kitchen waste and food contaminated paper (including pizza boxes) as well as garden material.

the blue box of recyclable glass, tin,and plastic

the blue bag of newspaper and newspaper inserts

the yellow bag of magazines, and non-food contaminated paper, cardboard, etc

Every 2 weeks, they also empty ..............

the garbage bin, which is supposed to contain only things that cannot be returned to any of the Return-It recyclable sites

We are NOT allowed to use biodegradable or compostable plastic bags, as they do not really disintegrate.

Food scraps are to be wrapped in newspaper or a paper bag.

OH makes sure that some garden refuse, such as grass clippings or a bed of twigs, is on the bottom of the garden bin before he puts any other compostable things in there.

They advise washing out the bins occasionally with a mild detergent and rinse with water ............. but I'm not sure where we are supposed to tip the water, as we are not allowed to pour soapy water into outside drains or rainwater catch basins!

We went on an exploration last weekend, to investigate the closest Return-It depot for us ................. that's where we have to take things like all batteries, cardboard beverage containers, electronics, medications light bulbs and tubes, thermostats and smoke alarms, paint, flammable liquids, petrol, pesticides, small appliances, power tools and equipment, electronic toys, etc etc.

Dea

Dea Report 2 Aug 2013 21:38

You are lucky Sylvs !!

Our 'potentially smelly' rubbish collection is only every 2 weeks !!!

Dea Xxx

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Aug 2013 04:18

Dea

It has only just extended to taking so much ................ but was only every 2 weeks until the end of June. We're still getting used to the new schedule!

Our pick-ups also change, moving forward, whenever there is a stat holiday .............. they usually only move 1 day but sometimes 2 days (eg, Christmas and Easter)

we actually are issued a calendar every year to stick on bulletin board to indicate which days our pick-ups will be AND now, also the weeks when garbage will be picked-up vs garden waste and compost!
