Thanks Sylvia

The help clinic is bound to have an effect on the other boards by elevating a chosen few to be GR advisors. It is now their "job" to find solutions as they are receiving payment in kind. GR say they are not employees but I beg to differ, I think they are under paid employees.

I have complained to GR about the new set up. It's taken the enjoyment out of it for me.

Did'nt you apply to be a starry person then TootyFruity?

I am glad I did'nt not that I would have been accepted anyway.

With a bit of luck the only queries they are going to get on there are things that cannot be found anyway

I wasn't asked and I wouldn't have accepted anyway ja...x. It's not sour grapes I just think it devalues all the other helpers.

They have inadvertently created a heirachy the starry people and the rest. By doing this they have stated the help given by some is more appreciated than others. I have seen you and others on the boards and am in awe of your skills.

jax Report 20 Nov 2010 00:05

What I can make out some people were asked and most did'nt accept so they stuck a thread on Tips and records for volunteers. I know a few things on the critera were paid member for a year and 100 people in your tree and no history of abuse

I have seen the work of both of you two Tootyfruity and Jax

and remember respect is not given - it is earned

And you both have earned the respect you have

No coloured symbol of any type signifies anything of any value to anyone

I thank you both

I still think it devalues the rest of the helpers and as such I am seriously thinking of not renewing my membership.

If they can think so little of the people who make this site what it is then I'm not sure I want to be part of it. Let's face it without the helpers it's not much of a site. I guess I will have to start looking for something similar elsewhere.

Renes

I just can't bring myself to post the help on the boards when the starry people are getting payment in kind. It is on a par of helping a heir hunter. If I stay on the site then I may help via pm

I cannot understand how limiting search resources could possibly be a better service.
I cannot see it lasting for long.

Oh I agree TF

Thanks Renes x

I'm fairly new to this site really, but I enjoy helping others like a lot of us on here and I dont agree with the star buisiness at all.

Hi

back from afternoon coffee and grocery shopping.

TootyFruity

...... I was one of the ones who received an email last week asking if I wanted to be an Official Advisor

I asked several questions in trying to find out what it was all about ............... they said that the Help Clinic and Official Advisors was to address the problem identified in the survey done earlier this year that helpers felt underacknowledged by GR

so they came up with this brilliant idea of the Help Clinic and the starry names

The starry ones are only supposed to use GR, fmp or Scotlands People on the Clinic, no c&p'ing from ANY other site, free or otherwise.

Needless to say, I turned it down, as did every other person who had been approached that I know about.

So far as I know, all the ones now starred answered the GR request for volunteers.

The only requirement ..... and the basis on which the offer was made to us was
..... member for more than one year
..... helped on Records
..... had a tree with more than 100 names in it
..... no history of abuse

Yesterday, I sent 5 separate complaints in to GR ........ one of them regarded the disparaging of members who helped but did not have a star

I've posted that communication and the response about 3 or 4 pages back on this thread, if it is still there.

I believe it is completely disparaging, and in no way answers the complaint that GR did not acknowledge that all the help on the boards was given by members

It in fact makes it worse.

I told them that there were excellent helpers who were now going to be told that their work was worthless because they had not been identified by GR as "members recognised by us for their effort and knowledge when helping other members".

There will of course be no changes or replies to complaints now until Monday, as the Support Staff only work 8 am to 4 pm UK time, Monday to Friday! What used to be known as Bankers' hours!!

There may well be a mass exodus of helpers if things do not improve

There are two other possible sites .... Family Tree Forum, set up by GR members who left around 2007 after a major change, and Rootschat

Neither allow the C&P'ing of information from ancestry etc because there could be a copyright problem, but they do allow helpers to use those sites and post the information in other formats.

Both sites are also FREE (FTF does ask for donations)
