You don't have to pay to be a member on GR, and set up your tree.

It began as a free site on which people could put their trees, and get Hot Matches. The free members can read the boards but not post on them. They can receive pms from paying members and then reply to them, but they cannot initiate a pm.

Then they began to extend the services, and set up another level of membership, Standard

Standard members can set up up a tree, get Hot Matches, but also post on these boards, and contact other members by pms.

Those were the 2 categories of membership when I joined in 2003 or 2004. I got the Standard membership which was something like £5 or 6 a year.

Because I have never let my membership lapse, nor have I upgraded, I still get 12 months membership for £9.95 or whatever the rate is.

Gold membership was the next category set up, about 3 years ago I think, and then Platinum either last year or earlier this year.

so there are 4 levels of membership ... Free + 3 paid

so this is how your Dad and ex can be members and have their trees.

GR now claim on the home page on this site that they have over 11 million members ..... and this is true because they nver let a member go! So unless someone actually removes themself from this site, and tells GR to remove their number it stays.

If you are a paying member and do not pay your sub when it is due, GR drop you down to a Free member. Your tree stays, you can work on your tree, and you can check the boards.

Numbers are assigned consecutively ............. so they are well into the 11 million

I reckon that in fact there are no more than 1 million still interested

possibly 100 or so are active on the boards

possibly 1000 are active in building their trees.

does that answer your question???

I know all that Sylv

I am sure I joined this site 5 to 7 yrs ago but it tells me it was 2007?? which is strange as the password I use for this site is not the password I used 3 years ago (if you know what I mean) I have a oldish membership number compared to newbies because I added a few names but only became a paid member in Jan this year.
I know a couple of my aunts have thier parents in thier trees...although they dont know the date of thier own dads birth because I have found this out through digging about and buying a cert which turned out to be him but 3 years earlier than they thought.
So are newbies coming on here expecting to find thousands of thier rellies hanging around ready to answer thier questions?

Of course they are

I don't see many ads for GR over here ................ but what I do see (eg, when I go on Friends Reunited) imply that with 11 million members, you'll find all your relations back to King Kong with a snap of your fingers!

The ads that I see (and I presume ones that appear on tv etc in the UK) imply that GR has all the records that you might need

I thought I joined in 2003, but GR tells me it was 2004

Yeah I tend to use the same password for a few things and When I got internet access in 2005 my password changed but the password I have for this is one I used between 2001 and 2004 which makes me wonder??

Anyway where are these 10 million members tonight? lol

Yeehh - I know Sylvia,

I was just hoping a 'little miracle' might have happend while I was asleep.

I did notice it was breakfast rather than the usual weekend 'brunch' and this was much appreciated !!!

Hope you enjoyed your day...

Two days in and I note that the "Help Clinic" is currently showing just 19 enquiries. Out of the 19 there are 11 enquiries which have been posted by members who I recognise as regular helpers on other GR message boards.

Could it be that GR are missing their target audience?

Cynical old me.
