Hi Brenda and Ann

Couldnt resist popping back in in between making the dinner. I also found the same information as you Brenda?

Edwin or Edward, that is the question!

On Dorotheas marriage certificate she has her father down as Edwin but on her sisters Edith Constance, she has her father down as Edward.

I am sure that they must be the same person.

I will be back later,lol

I will order the certificate this evening.

As for the mothers name note her middle name Saran Ann. I learnt from
researching my mothers family tree that alot of the woman called themselves by their second names. Even Dorotheas sister was known by Constance yet her full name was Edith Constance.

SO I would say that I am 85% certain that this is the correct family.

Really really must go now and again thankyou all

Yes, Dionne - I noticed her middle name, but if I were you I'd only specify the father as being William when you order the birth cert. Also, in view of the fact that there is a stepdaughter, surname Harvey, William and wife possibly married Dec q 1883 in Maldon. Free BMD has a marriage with William Livermore and Annie Harvey on the same page. So perhaps Edwin/Edward lied about his age when he enlisted, (QUITE LIKELY) or he was born before their marriage and therefore could have been a Harvey????

Moody Blue Report 2 Nov 2007 16:03

Funny you should say that Ann............

Births Sep 1882
Harvey Edward William W.Ham 4a 176

Though, 1891 census has Edwin born abt 1885 which fits with the other birth in 1884 for Livermore.Think it most likely this one!

Just as a matter of interest, I found a death in Victoria, Australia, for an Edwin Livermore in 1931.

However, I don't think it's your man, because if it's the same person, he had a son called Clement Ross Livermore who was 21 when he joined up in 1915 (giving his father's name as Edwin William Livermore).

If the 1884 birth is correct, that makes him too old to be your Edwin.

If you want more details of the death, you can find it here.

http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria

There's a small charge (AUS$0.99) to view the full record.

UPDATE: just found his marriage in NSW in 1888, so I should think that rules him out.

I think he probably just lied about his age, and the Livermore birth you found is probably right.

Dionne Report 2 Nov 2007 17:19

Hello All.

Thankyou so much for all of the information. Now I am trying to digest everything. Have I got this correct as follows?

It looks like Edwin/Edward was 17 when he went into the Amry. He spent ten years in South Africa untill November 1911.He was then discharged in May the following year 1912.

So in 1912 he was not in South Africa. He must have come back to this country with his two daughters.

My questions now are.

Did he have a wife in South Africa or was she a 'common law' wife.Did she come back with him?

Where is his date of death and place?

I have ordered the birth certificate that Brenda so kindly found for me.

Thanks again everyone
Dionne

Here was me thinking I had a straight forward family, lol

I suppose deaths 1912 onward in England have to be looked at, although wasn't he supposed to be deceased by the time of his daughters marriage? So perhaps not too long a search!

Dionne

Dionne Report 2 Nov 2007 17:27

Oh yes Ann.

When Dorothea got married to Herbert Sloper in 1930 she was 21 years old and her father was down as deceased on the marriage certificate.

Has anyone got access to findmypast? Perhaps his marriage and births of children might be on the Regimental indexes.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 2 Nov 2007 17:45

Don't know if anyone's already mentioned this as a possible marriage? (a bit late, though)

Marriages Mar 1925 (>99%)

Clarke Edith M Livermore W. Ham 4a 123
Livermore Edward A Clarke W. Ham 4a 123

I've had a quick look at the overseas BMDs on familyrelatives without finding anything, but they're very hard to search.

Ann i did a regimental search this afternoon.... and found nothing :(

But then they may have had the name Harvey? or they may have just had their mothers name until they came back? is it worth looking for a marriage after he came home?

was plain ann now annielaurie Report 2 Nov 2007 18:13

Thanks Nicola, but it looks as though Wayne has already done it, so thanks to Wayne too!

I suppose it's a possibility that they married 1912 onwards, but then it would be in the normal index, not the regimental one.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 2 Nov 2007 18:17

i wonder if the children were born over there with their mothers name and only took their fathers name when their parents married upon return.

Dionne

Dionne Report 2 Nov 2007 19:29

Thankyou again friends.

Wayne I dont think the girls would have had the name Harvey because Harvey was the name of Edwards mother and he was being called Livermore when he joined the Navy.

Mary Im not to sure about that marriage.I noted that the middle initial for Edward is an A. His middle name was William. I also worked out he would have been 28 on return to this country and must have died between the age of 28 and 46.(Dorotheas marriage certificate has his as deceased in 1930)

A question? If Edward and the mother of his children didnt get married in South Africa, would the mother have been able to come into this county as she would be South African and not an official dependent of Edwards.

Wow, this is interesting!!!

Dionne - I live in Worthing, is there anything I can do for you with regards to Arthur Knight? Were there addresses given in Worthing on their marriage certificate? If so, I could take a photo for you or maybe I could look up a copy of the local newspaper to see if there was a wedding announcement etc?

I wonder how Dorothea came to be in Worthing?

I think you say that you have a copy of Arthur's death certificate, did he die in Worthing? Maybe he was cremated in Worthing Crematorium?

More than happy to help if I can.

Sue
