I wonder if it's because I don't sub to FMP and would have to go through the NA?

I did a search today on the register and when I clicked on the preview, it gave me the name I had searched for but also another name in the house

Maybe that ties in with what Rosie posted

Gins - Have you thought of taking out a free trial on FMP? Do you, perhaps, have a lapsed account you can access the Register through?

Gee

Gee Report 7 Nov 2015 15:47

Det

I do have a lapsed account and am signed in when searching the 1939

I see that when you are on 'preview' there seems to be a link next to the closed record 'Check if you can open a closed record'

I am unable to click on this link so think that it is for sub members

Can't c&p on this device, but yes, you're right.

There were 2 options to Open a Closed record.
One was for FMP subscribers, the other via the National Archives for non-subscribers.

Added - no mention of any fee on the subscribers link.

Kense Report 7 Nov 2015 16:10

It seems you can work out the TNA number from the URL of the preview page.

Kense

Kense Report 8 Nov 2015 17:28

In the URL there is a sequence like
:
/record/locked?id=tna%nllnn%nl1234%nl1234a%l567%

l and n represent letter and digit but the 1234a and 567 are the piece and item numbers.

Just insert those in the advanced search.

EDITED as I had letter and digit the wrong way round and in order to clarify..

I bought some credits and found a person whose address I knew but was looking for another person who was living there at some time only to find the named individual was a servant not the person I wanted, rather a waste of money.

On reading news from the National Archives I can search the 1939 Register there I am not sure if it will be free of charge similar to when the 1911 Census was issued, in which case I will make the journey there for a long day of searching.

Lesley -

(they are closed to visitors on Monday)

If you do manage to get a definitive reply, perhaps you could let everyone else know?

JoonieCloonie Report 9 Nov 2015 12:59

Lesley and others, this has probably been mentioned but ...

If you know the name of one person at an address, try this.

Put no name in the blanks for the person you are searching for.

Put in the borough/district if you know it, and the street name if you know it.

In the blanks for the name of another person living at the address, put the name of the person you know to be in the household. Do the search.

The results will give you the name of the person whose name you entered, plus the name and dob of any other people in the household (whose records are not officially closed).

If you are searching for a very common name, this may not work. But then you will have the piece and item numbers from the person you know is yours, so you can narrow it down (see Rambling Rose's answer to my question at 6 Nov 2015 16:33 just above)

If you apply to have a closed record opened and they decide that it CAN be opened then there is no cost if you are a Findmypast subscriber (although they reserve the right to limit the number of closed records you can ask to have opened).

If you are not a subscriber then you have to apply through the National Archives and there IS a cost for this.

ArgyllGran Report 10 Nov 2015 11:50

Slight change of subject - not about closed records:

Entering someone's exact date of birth in the Advanced Search form seems a waste of time, to some extent.

I searched for my lost Edith by first name (as I don't know if she married or not) and exact DOB - 14/02/1886.
Two pages of names came up.

However, having tracked down the deaths of some of those people, it appears that although they were born in February 1886, they were not all born on the 14th.

So although the maiden name of one of them is that of my Edith, I'll still have to buy the marriage cert in order to find if she is the right person or not.

The online death record of the Edith on the 1939 register is no help, as it was before 1969, so the exact DOB isn't shown online. Frustratingly, she died in the last quarter of 1968!
So near and yet so far.

Kense Report 11 Nov 2015 09:28

I suppose that if they allowed a proper search by DoB, you could find out anyone's DoB by searching 365 or 366 times. So that would be a potential loss of revenue.

Well - they still haven't sorted out a box to enter the discount code. Correspondence is on-going!

In answer to the getting records unlocked question, this morning my dad's record is there so they have unlocked it on the basis of the death cert and info I gave them but had no email (yet) to confirm maybe I won't get one

Jan

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 17 Nov 2015 11:41

After seeing Janet's post above I checked on my mother's record which I had asked to be opened (I forwarded her death certificate) and it is opened on the image but not yet on the transcript so doing a search doesn't show a result.

I didn't get an email from them either, so perhaps they aren't going to bother confirming.

So if they don't tell the informant that a record has been opened then they certainly won't tell anyone else who has paid to view that household.

Janet

Janet Report 19 Nov 2015 08:27

I got a confirmation e mail yesterday after the event but I did get one !

He still doesn't come up on a search, or the transcription, so other than me not sure anyone else would know he was there

Rambling Report 19 Nov 2015 12:42

This is an interesting response email to a query re address not showing

" " the error appears to be that the household was never transcribed with a street name. This is why it won't show up on the search for address, but will appear on the search for name.
This is an issue that our technical team is aware of, and is something we are working to remedy. Due to the bulk of transcription errors and evidence of death requests, I cannot guarantee a point of time when this will be completed,"

( being picky but why not just say 'date' instead of "point of time" lol..or maybe they feel "point of time" gives them much more leeway...to infinity and beyond! ;-) )

Has anyone else got an email from FMP today saying Your exclusive £3.99 offer for the 1939 Register is inside?

I got one today and this is what it says:-

For one week only, you can unlock your family's household in the 1939 Register for just £3.99 with your exclusive code below (just for you lovely subscribers) - that’s over 40% off the usual price of £6.95

I put in the code and it came up with Discount code is no longer valid.

Has anyone else got the emal and did your code work?
