Hi Zoe, I was just going to delete my thread as I think I've worked out the answer but then thought it might help other newbies like me to think of various permutations! My William Briggs wasn't born in St Chartford, Bedfordshire in 1826 According to the 1861 Census he was born in ST CHART, ASHFORD, KENT! heaven only knows how Bedfordshire came into it. He also manages to knock a few years off his age along the way. When he and Harriett were first married there was a difference of 5 years between them - in the 1871 Census 8 years - in the1881, 19 years - 1891, 10 years. Harriett dies in 1900 at the age of 66 and William dies in 1909 at the age of 90, bringing them back to their correct birth ages! Phew! Only taken me about half a day to work it out! Many thanks for reading my post. Cherry

Anne Report 22 Mar 2006 16:03

Hi I was hoping you could help me solve this mystery I have found my Great grandfather Francis Goodwin on the 1881 census aged 23, 1891 census aged 33 and on the 1901 census called frank aged 43. all stating he born in Leicestershire I found his marriage certificate to Lois in March 1879 aged 20. From this I worked out he was born during the last few weeks of March 1859. His father is also listed as Francis. This is where the mystery sets in. I have completely searched the BMD registers to find nothing. I have searched the 61 and 71 census but there is noone listed as father and son together with the same name born in Leicestershire around the time.He seems to have appeared from 1879 where was he before then !!!! Where else can I look. Please help Anne

Hi Zoe Re: Francis Goodwins I got the marriage certificate from the records office by photocopying it from the church records. His fathers occupation is very difficult to make out but its something to do with shoe manufacturing. Francis junior was a groom. From the 3 censuses I already found him on Francis and his wife Lois lived at 3 different addresses. Plus theaddress on his marriage certificate was some sort of boarding house so no luck there. From what I have learned from the family, her family was against the marriage and refused to have anything to do with him. On the marriage certificate her father is listed as still living but I know he died in 1866 so was Francis(father) still alive or had he died too. Until I find out more about the Francis' I am at a brick wall Anne

Hi Zoe Here's hoping you can help with this I will be eternally grateful if you can. It is my Grandmother Sarah Jeffery I have very little information but here goes. I have her 2 marriage certificates the first she married William Albert Anstead in Exeter on 4th February 1911. On this she was 22 years old which makes it born c1889. Her second marriage was to my Grandfather William Charles Summerfield in East Stonehouse, Plymouth Devon on 26th December 1916. On this she was 25 years old which makes her born c 1891. I also have her death certificate which is dated 24th February 1966, age on this is 78 years wich makes her birth c 1888. By the Wedding certificates her Father's name was Thomas Jeffery and his occupation was Forman in Dockyard. I cannot find her on Birth on BMD or on any census other than possibly 1901. I cannot find her father on BMD either. Someone got me an entry on Devon 1901 census which could possibly be her family. The only thing I am not to sure about on it is that the Head is down as Thomas W. Jeffery. I have also got the same 1901 census entry from Ancestry and on there the Wifes Birthplace is different. The entries are: Thomas W Jeffery Head b c1867 Bridport Gloucestershire (Dorset) Sarah Jeffery Wife b c1867 Ilfracombe Devon [Ancestry: Exeter Devon] Alice Jeffery Dau b c1884 Exeter Devon Mary Jeffery Dau b c1900 Stonehouse Devon Nellie Jeffery Dau b c1890 Exeter Devon Sarah Jeffery Dau b c1887 Ilfracombe Devon Susan Jeffery Dau b c1893 Bristol Somerset Thomas Jeffery Son b c1896 Plymouth Devon William Jeffery Son b c1886 Tavistock Devon William Jeffery Father b c1822 Bridport The only thing I know for definate is that she had a brother named Tom. I am hope you can help as it has got to be a very thick brick wall. Regards Christine
