David Report 3 Apr 2016 11:54

Hi Elizabeth,
Yes this is my Alma, Rebecca married Daniel Bunce Oldham 1905 and I suspect Sarah Bunce may be his aunt Sarah Ann, so far I have found 3 Bunce families in the area about the time of Rebecca's birth, 2 fathers named Charles (1 from Hungerford the other from Wareham) with daughter Sarah Ann. The third family I've only discovered in the past day who came from Ireland and not as yet looked at.
ancestry DNA test confirms Boswell link.
Would love a copy of Alma's photo.
Many thanks for doing look up, I have been in contact with people that researched Alma and had no idea he'd been in a relationship. My next step will be to get Alma's death certificate on the chance Rebecca registered it.
David Bunce.

Elizabeth Report 3 Apr 2016 14:40

David to take a look at the same picture that I have of Alma along with his kin in your search bar south shore gypsys
Over the next few days I will double check to see what else I have
Also on the web is a picture of Almas mother in her 90's

Kevin Report 5 Apr 2016 16:24

Dear Elizabeth,
I am researching 'Gardners', 'Hunts' and Delllaways in the Croydon Surrey area around 1895-1910.
I know many were registered in the census as Hawkers and Tin men and also some were born in tents on Mitcham common however I am unsure if there is a Romany link as opposed to being economic travellers.
Any help would be great
Names: Alice Gardner/Noah Gardner/George Gardner/Louisa Hunt/William Hunt/George dellaway

David Report 6 Apr 2016 11:37

Hi Liz,
Can't believe I've never thought of searching "South Shore Gypsy's" before, I had heard anectdotally that Rebecca's Boswell family were the only gypsy family allowed to live there so was good to see it in print. My Bunce's married Gray's, Smith's & Jones and other families that escape me at the moment.
Many thanks for taking the time to have a look it's much appreciated.

Hello Elizabeth,

Not sure if you're doing look-ups still, no worries if not.

Trying to confirm something, really. But the details that I have are really sketchy, to the point that it might not even be worth looking up because the results will be endless.

My great Aunt claimed that my Mum's Dad was a Romany Gypsy, but that he lived next door to her during WW2. Of course, in my research, I found that Gypsy families tend to be really loyal. (there's a back story that I won't get into).

The name we were given was James Smith. And it was within the Mossley near Oldham. I guess what I really wanna know, is was there any Romany Gypsy within that area during WW2 going by that name or if Smiths in general are connected to a family in that area.

Any help that can be given, I'd be grateful. But of course, this is assuming that my Aunt did not lie.

Kind regards,

:-)for KIM
John Eyres, married aged 18,born 1897 to Elsie Georgina Hughes ,she was 19,born 1896..they married @ the register office,in the Parish of St Thomas ,Salisbury,Wiltshire,on the 18/8/1915,the witness were Charles Jarvis and Charles Packet.(ref vol 5A,page 543)
John's occupation is stated as a sheepskin dealer and Elsie as an hawkers.
John's father William is also a skin dealer and Elsie's father Fred is an hawkers.
The marriage is also included in the records belonging to the R&TFH Society...I have also found the marriage of Walter Eyres and Amy Hughes,of which both John and Elsie were witness' ..and from the following information it is fair to say that both John and Walter are brothers as is Elsie and Amy.....the marriage of Walter Eyres and Amy Hughes at the register office district of Amesbury,Wiltshire on 18/3/1916
Walter is aged 29,bachelor,dealer,son of Walter Eyres,Amy is 21,daughter of Frederick and an hawker :-

Sorry, I should have added that there is a great possibility that James Smith lived on Manchester Road, Mossley during the war. Thanks.

Hi , thanks for that , I have managed too find that out,my mum Violet had me late in life and never told me about her past she left Amesbury and moved too Bristol , I was told buy one of her sons I just met that her dad was Jack her mum was Elsie but this seems too much of a coincidence but I can't find anywhere were it says they had 2 daughters ,I was told they travaled fairgrounds before settling in Amesbury looking at Ayres and Hughs they look like quite large family's so probably only relatives would be distant cousins , I find all this fascinating but have hit a brick wall , and too be Honest was not that surprised when this information was given too me as I have very dark hair and eyes and they say I resemble a Romanian gypsy , not so much of a joke now . Is there any were else I can look for information too see if they had 2 daughters one of which is my mum , what's all this mean was my mum a gypsy too am I half gypsy ,is there any way I can find information on extended realitives,Just got my mums birth certifacate mothers name Hughs seems like they spelt Ayres Eyres in diffent ways just trying to track some distant relatives think that is going to be very hard , wondered what they did before they settled down . Thanks

Hi Liz,

Are you able to help me.... My grandfather is of Romany heritage, B1905 to parents Llewellyn Jones and Mary Warner. I cannot find any records for my grandfather/great grand parents or extended family. I believe that they travelled around shropshire/Newtown area and finally settled in Builth Wells.

I'm trying to find my grandfather (william) birth and marriage records. He married my grandmother Esther Ann Price.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm really struggling to research on my own.

Many thanks,

Sharon Report 11 Feb 2017 12:42

Hi Elizabeth
I was given your thread hoping you can help me. I am trying to trace my grandmothers family, we think they come from a travelling family. On her birth cert it says her name was Eliza Parker, but when she married my grandfather she was Elizabeth Draper. She was born in 1907 I think, on the 17th April in Farningham Kent.
The only brother's I know of are Abraham, born around 1893 Nelson !895 and John 1900, in names of Draper, I have found the 1911 census it says her fathers name was john and her mother Hester, but I cannot find any records of them or any other family. I know they moved around a lot. I was wondering if you could help me in any way

Thank you
Sharon Feast
