If I could ask was there a gypsy encampment in Kingsclere Hampshire? Look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks Jennifer

Hello Elizabeth

I am trying to find out abour my Great Grandmother who I think was maybe a Romany Born 1858/died 1895 in the Horncastle area of Lincolnshire. She married Henry Alliss and had 6 children one of them my Grandmother Juliet.
Would appreciate any help.thank you
Carol

Louise Report 29 Oct 2014 14:57

Hi Elizabeth,

I have been trying to find out information about my Grandmothers family who were Romanies. My Grandmother's maiden name was Winifred James. (born c1913) We think she was born in Wales.

Her mother was Mary Ellen James (maiden name Harrell). Mary had a sister Bridget Harrell. Mary married Daniel Griffin James. Other than this information we have come up against a brick wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recently i have found a marriage certificate for my Grandfather Jack Olds to a Mary Pocock. We cannot find any information to say they divorced. My Grandfather Jack Olds and my Grandmother Winifred James then got together.

We cannot find any marriage certificate. They went on to have seven children and lived in Warwickshire. Mary James lived with my Grandmother Winifred and Grandfather Jack Olds as her husband died quite young. They lived in Warwickshire.

My dad and his sister were shocked to find their dad had married before and that their parents may not have been married. My Aunt seems to remember a secret in the family and that Winifred's family disowned her.

Regards and many thanks

Louise

for LOUISE
The following is the only references that I hold to your given names-however these names were not researched further at the time(this would only happen when we could find no connection to the Romany`s
1/Jack Olds born Gaydon,Southam,Warwickshire 1/4/1900 he was christened at Frankton,Warwickshire 5/8/1901 parents were Arthur Ernest Olds and Emma Elizabeth-this Jack in 1901 resided at Gaydon with his family stating at Back of Church
2/also submitted at the same time was the name of Peter Olds b Warwickshire 1941 mothers maiden name being Harrell
3/Daniel G James ,and a Mary Rafferty possible marriage of
---all 3 questions were submitted by the same enquirer some 20 years ago(unfortunately due to data protection I was not allowed to register the enquirer`s name)
the marriage of Daniel was checked out and they married at Neath 3/4 of 1912
>>>>>>whilst I am almost sure that these people do not belong to your research -has I previously said non turned out to be Romanys-please do not hesitate to get back in touch

Thanks Elizabeth. Jack was my Grandfather and Peter was my uncle. That's interesting we thought my grandmothers maiden name might have been Harrell. Not sure now if her maiden name was rafferty, Harrell or James now. Peter is my uncle though and the entry above says Harrell. We have struggled finding information with my grans side of the tree. Many thanks for the info so far. My dads side were all from Gaydon, generations of them they never moved. But my grans side? My dad remembers when he was young visiting my grans relatives in Wales. They had the old traditional caravans. I really appreciate your research. Thank you again. Louise
