Dea

That's what I said on another site yesterday, that the UK was not used to these temperatures, you were not prepared for it, and the houses are not built for it.

Please remember to wear a hat when you go out .... a friend who has lived in Moscow for 18 years says wear a tight fitting hat and then a looser one over top of that.

Always wear warm gloves ....... if necessary wear 2 pairs

Wear warm socks.

Layer your clothing .............. wear an under vest or long sleeved T-shirt, then a warm top, then a thick jumper or sweater.

A down (duck or goose) vest or jacket is great. I have several vests (no sleeves) that I wear on top of my sweaters for much of the winter .... keeps my torso warm while my arms are not too bundled up.

Just realised ...... vest to you is underwear isn't it? What do you call a top piece with no sleeves, similar to the waistcoat that Dad used to wear? I know you have the thing I'm talking about because a friend lent me one when we were over there in 2008.

............... get some long johns and/or thick tights ..... sometimes you might have to wear both

If you have outside pipes, or are worried about pipes freezing, leave one tap running ........................... a slow stream will help prevent the freezing. Does waste water, but what is worst??

When you get a chance ................lag ALL pipes in the attic, close to outside walls, or that run long distances from tank to outlet. Lag any water tanks in the house. Think about how you might lag the outside pipes ........ or how you might get rid of them.

We don't have outside pipes on our houses here

....................... mind you, pipes still burst in cold weather. We have had 3 major underground pipes in the Vancouver area in the last week .............. that's difficult to prevent, especially if the pipes are getting old.

glad to hear that your friend is being taken to hospital.

Sylvs..You can add anything on the end of those xx to edit,it just needs more than 2 charachters..
Vest is underwear here yes.
I think what you mean for the outside layer is normally padded without sleeves and we call a Body Warmer.
Really good things they are, must get one again if this is gonna hang around long.I know mother has a few and swears by them and her trainers to keep her feet warm as she is outside quite a bit on the farm.

Father wears a vest ,t-shirt.shirt,woolly jumper and then his overalls on top of all that lot.Never enquired if he has long Johns on underneath his trousers myself, but never seen any on the washing line,so guess not.
I wear leggings under my jeans,do the same job as long johns they do.

Fathers name is John and he is 6ft,so he is a Long John himself;)

The leccy blanket is on.....yipee........will be snuggly warm tonight. Hope the gasman cometh soon.

I wear a vest top under my tops and they really keep me warm. My mum used to go on about keeping stomach and kidneys covered!! Have had welly socks on under trousers today and my feet are almost hot! Have been wearing a fleece and a cardi.

Have a good night all.

SylviaInCanada Report 29 Nov 2010 22:38

with metal buttons

AND buttons near the hem to attach suspenders to, to hold up thick stockings

SylviaInCanada Report 29 Nov 2010 22:42

Thanks, fans, that is what friend called it what we call a down vest
.

I wear silk jersey underwear when it gets really cold here

I find that it keeps me really warm and snug, but it's not too bulky.

Then I add warm sweater, fleecy, Body Jacket as needed

I have just ordered a new pair of silk long underpants and 2 pairs of silk sock liners

:))))

I always remember this thing being too small, then it probably had to last for years.

Always suffered from chapped legs behind the knees as a child, not surprising the silly clothes us girls had to wear back then...no trousers to school like nowdays. Then again I dont really remember having a pair of trousers wooley tights...which again were too small

We had to wear white ankle socks winter and summer ............. although there was the option of wearing lisle stockings

even in the 1950s, that was what our grandmothers but no-one else wore. So we were not about to wear them!!

It was the era of long skirts, not mini-skirts, so our knees were usually covered.

No trousers, of course.

Boots were allowed when it snowed

and we lived on the Lancashire edge of the Pennines. It gor bl***y cold even in those days. Two or three times a winter we'd have snow fall overnight to half way up the front door.

I still have a line near my ankles, lighter colour below, darker above ......... and I left school in 1959!

I can actually remember that my legs felt colder in nylons than they did when wearing the little ankle socks.

Such a stressful day.
Tube strike in London.
SIL leaves Dartford at 6.30 am and reaches Putney at 9.15.
He has been working on a roofing job there.
Has gone in by train other days but drove because of the tube strike.
Got to work and parked .
Looking for pen to write on parking permit.
Too late he gets a parking ticket.
What a jobsworth.
Drives home and is in 3 car crash and car is towed away.
We collect contents of car and drive home. Holdup on the A2.
Another bad crash- multi car.
Come of at slip road and expect to rejoin road beyond the accident.
The road is solid and too late we cannot get off.
Did not get home from work until 10 pm.
Daughter was looking forward to a few Christmas treats after him being unemployed for 2 years.

Only his pride.
Grand daughter would normally have been picked up from nursery by her Daddy but other daughter was doing it instead. She would have been stuck otherwise.

The snow is only just about to start here and we are on home visits tomorrow. I do hope London is better prepared than last year.

jax

jax Report 30 Nov 2010 00:46

Not good LK

Was it because of snow? hope everyone was ok

No snow but roads are slick.
He was just accelerating after being at traffic lights and someone pulled out in front of them from a driveway. Did not affect him just the three cars he pulled out in front of.
