is the snow worse than it was in 2008?

Gee

Gee Report 1 Dec 2010 06:56

Here its the worst snow since I was a kid.

BBC Look North were presenting from Sheffield last night and poor old Harry Graysham looked like a snowman.............

JB is going to work, he walks bless him but I is staying put BMWs are not known for snow driving!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 1 Dec 2010 07:13

wow!

I remember some bad snows in Oldham in the 1950s, when I was in high school .... but we lived on the edge of town, almost at the Penniens.

Then there was the winter of 1963

There were also bad snows in 1940 and 1947

But they also tended to be in January/February

Late November and early December is really quite strange I think.

Don't know much of what they were like after we left in 1967.

We did see some shots of various parts of England, Scotland and ireland on the BBC World News.

How come you are still up Sylvs? I've seen newsreels of the snow in 47.... I was snug and warm then........I was born in the May! Thanks for the brekkie.

Beaten Dea down again...........ha

Gins, it sounds horrific where you are. We may be getting some snow later today but are clear at the moment and the cars are whizzing past.

Must get some Christmas cards written today and I've nearly finished the wotsit I put in with them.

LK - stay safe today.

A hot shower is looming.....wonderful.

C

it's about the usual time I go to bed!

I wasn't christened, and Mum wasn't churched (very important in those days), for several weeks in the 1940 snows because they couldn't get to the church .... it was less than 10 minutes walk away, but it was a hill up from our hosue to the main road ................ actually less than about 100 yards, but still blocked.

Morning all.

Cvilised breakfast. I will take the lot today and in front off the fire. I have a couple of days off.
OH has had to go to work though.

Our car is a sometimes a 4x4 and has anti skid lock brakes.
It is a Honda CRV.
I do not know much about cars but but it has proved itself in a number of tricky situations like yesterday.
And yes Gins it was the BMW that came off worse yesterday.
We pushed several and saw others stuck.

We tend to get less snow in London but know how to deal with it less well.

I remember the winter of 63. I had great fun playing on the common on cardboard sledges.
47 was before my time.

Several years ago we had very heavy snow while at Grandads house on the Wirral in Cheshire. The kids made a huge snowman. Very unusual to get that much snow but that was at Christmas.

But November?

Hi all,

Couldn't be bothered rushing out of bed for breakfast Cynths but very lovely it was when I got to it - thank you Sylvs Xxx

Looks like some of you are managing to take a couple of days off - very sensible, but I think it is going to take a LONG time before we get a respite from this awful weather.

I had little grandson, with his chickenpox yesterday - SO sad............

He is just turned 2 and actually being very brave about it - he stops scratching when you tell him to and manages a few 'run arounds' through the day, BUT, he his little tongue is covered in chickenpox spots and every time he tries to eat something he just cries..... - I tried him with rice pudding and he couldn''t eat, yoghurt (his very favourite) - a couple of little mouthfulls and then he cried...lots of other soft things and he was SO hungry he dived at the first mouthful and then had to stop.

I don't usually give sweets and chocolates but tried him with a few chocolate buttons and they made him cry too.......... In the end, I decided to do him some warm milk and after telling me " I not a baby, I a big boy" !!, he did manage to drink a few cups of that throughout the day, each time, telling me the same thing.

Just hope his mouth gets better soon - It is so sad to watch the little ones when they are poorly!!

Hope you all keep warm today.

See you later.

Take loads of 'emergency sandwiches' and drinks and a couple of books to read, just in case you have delays !!

I have experienced this many times.

I DO hope you get to fly on Friday !! - Get Renes to message us when you arrive !!!
