sorry if I am repeating anything that has already been asked. I just want to get things clear in my head and with so many pages to read through, I don't want to miss anything.

So you believe she was born Eleanor Nellie Cooley 1901 in Mile End according to her brothers army record, and later became Eleanor Nellie King when she married.

Although no birth has been located for her.

She also at one point used just Eleanor Cooley.

Do you have all the birth certs for her children? Is her name consistant on those or does it vary and if so, what were all the variations, even any slight spelling differences.

Were they any stories about her disappearance? Was there ever a divorce between her and her Mr King?

also anything else I have missed that might help me do a search (of course possibly just repeating what others have already done) but another pair of eyes never hurts and even if I can't find her I might be able to offer some suggestions.

It does appear that her birth wasn't registered, unless she was badly transcribed.

It might be worth contacting the local register office to Mile End (not sure which office deals with that area) and putting in an enquiry with them, you have an exact date of her birth from her brother's army record and know her parents name. So they may help, worth a try anyway.

Another option is, you I think know where he parents were living in 1901 (obviously before she was born), if you contact the local archives to that area, they may be able to find out the local parish for you and then try and find a baptism.

Of course finding her birth or baptism, isnt going to help find out what happened to her. But it might help with knowing exactly what name she was born with.

Just wondering whether Nellie is an abbreviation for Eleanor - any chance she was born/registered Eleanor, but later known as Nellie, so put both names on the marriage cert?

Nellie is an abbreviation for Ellen, so could just as easily be an abbreviation for Eleanor.

Hi Sib

Right this woman has been a pain from the start

As far as i Know her name was Eleanor Cooley on two of her childrens birith cert she had the the middle name of Nellie my dad rememner's people calling her Nellie

I think I need to go down to the rigister office and see what I can find out

The thing about her going in 1951 is 100 % as my dad was a young child at the time 7 years old and he was so close to be taken into care at the time. But lucky for him his dad was home at the time ( A firemen) and he stoped it and his sister was in hospital with cancer. so he does remember it.

Going in to my family;s history it is a very sad story

Debbie, if you can get back to the previous page (I wouldn't bet on it), I was the one who resurrected this thread.

I'm wondering where Richard Jr was in 1891.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 18 Nov 2010 22:44

I'd guess at this being Nellie Threadwell:

Name: Nellie O'grady
Spouse Surname: Threadwell
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1925
Registration district: Norwich
Registration county (inferred): Norfolk
Volume Number: 4b
Page Number: 345

Threadwell-O'Grady births
1927 Norwich
1929 and 1935 > Hertford

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 18 Nov 2010 22:51

I believe this birth was mentioned in your other thread:

Births Sep 1901
COOLEY Nellie Epsom 2a 22

She is in the 1911 census independently so is ruled out:

COOLEY NELLIE F 1902 9 Epsom Surrey

O'Grady/Treadwell - I didn't do the final step -- look for that Nellie's birth. ;)

There were Nellie O'Grady-s born in 1897 and 1912 (w/o middle initials) and in between w/ middle initials, 1905 and 1911, so indeed, that doesn't look like the same Nellie!

... except that it's the only Nellie Threadwell death there is, hmm, and there isn't a second marriage for the O'Grady one ...

Okay, the thing now is, when someone deletes their post, there is no trace left of it.

I have been replying to a post by Sib suggesting that the Nellie O'Grady who married Threadwell couldn't be the Nellie O'Grady whose death was posted. That post is gone now. Don't know why.

Also meant to say: Ellen and Eleanor were virtually interchangeable in the 19th century. And also, by the early 20th century, it wasn't uncommon for young women to be tarting their names up. My grmother became Lilian when she married because my grfather thought Lily was too common. A while back, I found someone's grandmother who had married as Kathleen Marion, but I found born as plain Kate Mary. ;)

So Eleanor Nellie could have been born plain Ellen or Nellie, and called herself Eleanor (or thought she was called Eleanor).

I'm sure it's already been pointed out, but I can't plough through all the pages...........

Nellie is a 'pet' name for women whose name is actually Ellen or Eleanor, so you can almost certainly rule out any idea of her having a second name.

Just trying to figure out who she was first, which could help find where she went!

Do you have Richard Jr's marriage certificate? Would be nice to know what he said for father's info.

Can you repeat for our benefit too, what Flick asked -- what did it say for father's info on Nellie's marriage certificate?

It is all in the thread, Flick -- and at the bottom of the page before this one I posted the 1891 household where Richard Jr, born c1886, is not present, and I can't find him elsewhere.

Richard Cooley 27
Ellen Cooley 26
James Cooley 4
Catherine Cooley 3

Debbie, also, I asked on the previous page -- the death certificate for Nellie Bradley -- you say it isn't your Eleanor, but not what it was on the death certificate that told you that. Can you tell us?

Flick

from what Flick has posted for the 1901 census, I would contact the records office/archive that has the baptism records for the nearest parish to that address they are living out. Bearing in mind your Eleanor was born a little after the census she is likely to of been baptised in that same area.,

Also in regards to the date of birth her brother gave for on his army record. What we have to remember is not to take that as concrete. I have seen far too often wrong dates being given by other family members for births, marriage deaths etc.

I wonder if this could be a possibility for her birth

Births Jun 1901 (>99%)
TOOMEY Eleanor Catherine Mile End 1c 484

I know the surname is Toomey, but Toomey sounds very like Cooley if you say them both out loud.

Just need to see if she exists as a toomey after her birht, if she does, then it will rule out this birth.
