Hi Zoe, This is more of a nightmare than a mystery ! I cannot find d.o.b.'s or marriage for Robert Phipps and Rebecca Clarke. Have tried various alternative spelling plus Family Search and given myself a headache trawling through Ancestry records with no success. They do not feature on the 1851 Census and, if the Ancestry death record is for him, then he died in 1855 in the Strand area. A son, William, was born in 1846 and his birth cert clearly shows Rebecca Phipps, previously Clarke, as his mother. William and another brother, George, born 1851 are on the 1861 Census as sons of a Robert and Sarah Phipps. As this Robert is only 21 years of age then he must have ben a cousin who took in the two boys after the death of their father. William and George were born in the Strand area. I have found a Robert Skinner Phips on Family Search born 1811, baptised St Clement Danes in 1812 and this is the right area. Any help/ideas would be gratefully received.

Hi Zoe, I wonder if you can give me some information, is there anyway I can find out is a married couple had any children after the 1901 census? Is there some other way of finding out, one couple were married in 1892 and the other in 1900. I know they both had one child by 1901 census but I was trying to find out if they had more children later on. Is there anyway I can find out? Betty

Georgina I know the British library in Kings X holds them look on their site it will tell you what they hold What the British Library has Under the Representation of the people legislation, the British Library has received a complete set of electoral registers for the whole of the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) from and including 1947. From 2003 the Library holds the full, but not the edited, version of the register. It also has a complete set of registers for 1937 and (except for Northern Ireland) for 1938. Apart from a few Scottish constituencies, the Library has no registers for 1932 to 1936 and 1939 and, apart from some Northern Ireland and the same few Scottish constituencies, it has none of the four registers issued during 1945 and 1946. For the period 1832 to 1931, only a general indication can be given of the British Library’s holdings which nevertheless total some 20,000 registers – it is modest to 1885, good from then until 1915 and modest again from 1918 to 1931. A complete inventory of the British Library’s holdings is listed in Parliamentary constituencies and their registers since 1832 which also lists non-parliamentary registers (burgess rolls, jurors lists, valuation rolls, etc.) and poll books held by the Library. What exists Electoral registration was introduced in 1832 and registers have been issued for each parliamentary constituency every year since then, with certain exceptions. Registration was suspended in both World Wars and there are no registers for 1916 and 1917 (1915-17 in Scotland) and from 1940 to 1944 inclusive. From 1919 to 1926 inclusive there were two registers a year called the ‘Spring’ and ‘Autumn’ registers. There were also two registers in 1945 and 1946; in addition to the regular registers in October, there was a special register in May 1945 for the general election and a supplementary register of service voters in March 1946. There were also two registers in 1868 and 1885. The January registers in both years were supposed to last the calendar year but were superseded in both cases by new registers on revised constituency boundaries in November. The latter registers lasted until the end of the following year and are identified as ‘ 1868/69’ and ‘1885/86’; otherwise registers are identified by the year in which they came into force even if they span part of two years. As a consequence of the Representation of the People (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2002 (SI 1871) and corresponding legislation for Scotland and Northern Ireland, two versions of the register were produced from 2003. The full version of the register contains the names of all voters and is used primarily to support the electoral process. Public access to it is strictly controlled. The edited version of the register is available for sale for commercial use for direct marketing, advertising, etc. It omits the names of electors who have exercised their right to opt out to protect their privacy. Here is their web address you can contact and ask if they hold the area you need http://www.bl.uk/contact/howto.html Zoe

Debbie They also have a child George with them don't they? Have you ordered the marriage cert as it will say if he is a widow or not. And the address may come in handy as it maybe the same as 1871 if I were you I would contact the registry office for that area and ask if they can find a death of Emma Bill in those years as sometimes GRO index misses some peoples details. I could ot find a marriage searched the GRO records no joy my cousin contacted the relevant office by email a few days later we had the details and ordered the cert, it was just not in the GRO records Zoe

Betty After 1911 its a bit easier as the Mother Maiden Name is also on the ref for the certs, If you have a name you can search births in the area you believe them to be in it's much easier with a less common name. Its really hit and miss before 1911 Zoe

Hi Zoe, Sorry about this but as i can't go any further back due to their great great grandparents coming from Ireland. I just though I would try and find their children by going forward.. The two family's married names are McCall and Wharton but of course don't know christian names of any children born after 1901. I am very sure they would have had more than one child. How would I go about finding them?? Betty
