Hi again, I've plotted out the birth places and dates from the 1901 census in an effort to pinpoint where they are hiding in 81 and 91: 1851 Bethnal Green Thomas W Day Born 1853 Bethnal Green Esther ? Born 1876 Poplar Thomas W Day Born 1879 Poplar Myra E Day Born 1882 Poplar George H Day Born 1886 Stepney David A Day Born 1889 Hackney Martha E Day Born 1891 Plaistow Henry Day Born 1896 Bromley John Day Born I've tried to find Myra's birth, but only found a thin possibility of Myra being the second middle name of a Maud Catherine born in Poplar in 1879. However the family should be in that area in the 1881 census? I also looked up Plaistow for 1891, which could be either West Sussex or Herefordshire. I've no reason to believe they ever went near either of those counties though. So I looked for the births of Henry Day's in 1891 and found: 1890 Bethnal Green, 1891 Bromley or 1892 West Ham (which comes up in the next generation). These all seem very possible. Please could you see if you can find them on either census in those places? Yours, wishing they had an unusual name, very grateful again, Heidi

Stephen I know it's not what you want but did you have this Name: Mary Elliott Age: 18 Estimated birth year: abt 1833 Relation: Governess Unmarried Gender: Female Where born: Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, England Civil parish: Swaffham Prior Ecclesiastical parish: Ely County/Island: Cambridgeshire Country: England Source information: HO107/1762 Registration district: Newmarket Sub-registration district: Cheveley ED, institution, or vessel: 1b Folio: 243 Page: 4 Household schedule number: 13 GSU Number: 193654 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Name: Mary Elliott Age: 28 Estimated birth year: abt 1833 Relation: Servant Gender: Female Where born: Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, England Civil parish: Paddington Ecclesiastical parish: St Saviour County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Source information: RG9/5 Registration district: Kensington Sub-registration district: St Mary Paddington ED, institution, or vessel: 22 Folio: 69 Page: 14 Household schedule number: 55 GSU Number: 542554 Can't see Mary in 1871 Do you know who your grandfather married? If so do you know when as you should order their marriage cert should have his fathers name on there if he knows who it is. It doesn't seem like she married can't see any of the children's birth's. As I said the best bet is to order your grandads marr cert Zoe

Zoe, that was a tremendous amount of work, something which I really do appreciate. You could well be right about Martha/Mary being the same. All the family you have kidly listed are the ones which I am working on, and thanks to you, just about finished. I am going to settle down for awhile and piece them all together. Once again Zoe, many, many thanks - I don't know what the rest of us would do without people like yourself... Take care... John

John Report 21 Apr 2006 20:33

Hi Zoe - It looks as though you were right in taking the name Martha as being that of Mary also. With one wife (Mary) and all the dates etc., it all drops into place. Even in the 1841 Census regarding John Cornelius (This could be the father of Mary - only thing is - the Mary born in 1841 to (Mary & Richard Nicholas) must have died as there are no references to a 'Mary' born in 1841 in later records... Again, many thanks.. John

Kathryn No sign of marriage Found his birth on info you gave Name: Frederick Hiram Loveday Year of Registration: 1881 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Fulham County: Greater London, London, Middlesex Volume: 1a Page: 214 I can't seem to see him in any censuses it would be worth investing in his birth cert as that would give you his parents names then maybe we could find him. Hope this may help. Zoe

Could be them Zoe as Daniel became a shoemaker and his children carried the names Jane, john & Elizabeth. You list a Mary born same year as Daniel, could they be twins. Also was the head John Thompson a widower? I don't have any certs. for iether at present. I'm assuming the wifes surname is WARDLEY as she was the only Ellen listed on the same marriage page. Is it possible to find John c1801 in later census's and see what he's up tp? thanks Lisa

Judith Report 22 Apr 2006 15:45

Yes indeed, My Grandfather FRED HUDSON was a foundling on the steps of Leeds Town Hall. Working back from his age given when he died in 1953 Nottingham, he was born about 1893/4 He always celebrated his birthday on Feb 2nd but this might not have been his actual birthday. He later lived in the Otley area and married ELLEN MAY SENIOR IN Otley in 1924. We don't know how he got the surname Hudson, whether it was from the person who found him or the family that he lived with or indeed that he was left with the name on him. Thanks for the offer. Cheers Judith

Judith Have you got his marriage cert? ~ does it have a fathers name on it, sometime when people are brought up by people they call them their father on marriage cert it may help establish if it's his real name or one that he was given! Have you contacted Leeds office to see if they have any info on foundlings? Zoe
