The consisteny and accuracy of documents is worth checking.

On the Irish Census 1911 my GF Francis Irvine is shown as being aged 72 and a Labourer...Methodist

On the 1901 Irish Census the same man is shown as being aged 65

Obviously one is in error.I beliieve it's the latter as my GF was 72 at his death in 1914

Or the wrong age is stated at death

did you look at the actual images of the censuses???


sometimes discrepancies like that are due to someone giving the enumerator the wrong information ........... could have been a child or a neighbour


Other times, the census is correct, but the modern day transcriber has mis-read or mis-interpreted the old-style handwriting.



Plus, of course, we have all had rellies who lied about their ages on censuses, and on other legal documents :-)


My grandparents lied about their ages on their marriage certificate .................

They each added 2 years to their ages ............ but that still made them under the age of 21, so I don't quite know why they did it!!

Had a nice meal and a good "catch up" session with the girls :-D

As part of our Christmas presents one of our sons gave us vouchers for Jamie Olivers restaurant might go Friday or Saturday :-D

Gins no alcohol tonight cos we were all driving but still had a good time :-D

Off to Burnley later for a meeting, then the hospice, then home for the Friday gang

Another way errors get written down is people write what they here.

In this fashion my GGF can become Ervine or Ervin

Makes the trail difficult to follow

Boy oh boy...........on the way to Burnley there was an incident and it took me 2 3/4hrs to get there

........on the way back, another incident 3hrs to get back :-|

Got onto the Snake Pass and it started snowing, I had visions of the police closing it when I was half way accross!
