Ha ha ha..
I worked in Smithfields for a while in the very early eighties as a butcher and my department was making Salt beef and pork.,just me in the department, none of the men wanted the job cos you were often wet with the brine that would then stiffen on your clothes as it dried.,wonder if it was my salt beef you had in those salt beef rolls Jax??

Will somebody do me a techie favour? Not too techie, I assure you. ;)

It looks complicated, but it isn't.

Go to Ancestry's post-1916 births index.

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8782&enc=1

Do a search, for anything you like.

When you have the search results, look at the address line.

Does it say .CO.UK or .COM?

If it says .com, change that to .co.uk and hit enter.

Now, click on the link at the top of the search results that says

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005

Does it take you to

http://search.ancestry.COM/search/db.aspx?dbid=8782&enc=1

or

http://search.ancestry.CO.UK/search/db.aspx?dbid=8782&enc=1

?

Every time I do a births search, I get switched to the .COM site.
Not marriages, not deaths, not census, just post-1916 births.

Ancestry is telling me to clear my cache, blah blah.
Well, I cleared my cache and deleted .com cookies, but I am *not*
deleting cookies universally (so I would have to sign in everywhere all over again)
or deleting my history (which I use dozens of times daily when I type urls, especially for work).

I can't see how *I* could be controlling what the links are on *their* web pages!!

Any results you get, one way or another, will be gratefully received. ;)

Christmas greetings one and all,

Well it is almost here and in just a weeks time we will all be shaking our heads and muttering "Was it all worth it?"

The stress about what to buy for Aunt Gladys or cousin George who you can't really stand but who always buys you something. About whether the weather will allow us to travel to see our relatives or whether they will manage to get to us. Did we remember to get the mince pies or the custard to go with the Christmas pud.

Christmas or at least what we celebrate on the 25th of December nowadays is a Christian festival. Few people realise that celebrations on 25th of December probably began long before the birth of Jesus Christ. It is believed to be the approximate date that the Babylonians celebrated the feast of Isis. Raucous partying, gluttonous eating and drinking, and gift-giving were traditions of this feast (Sound familiar?). The pagans of Northern Europe marked the winter solstice, known as Yule. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia (Winter solstice) and it is believed that it was only in 350AD that Pope Julius declared it the day to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Whatever your beliefs may the day bring you peace and goodwill.

I do not send out any Christmas cards preferring instead to make a direct donation to a charity of the money that I might have spent on cards and postage. The initial reason for that is that many years ago a good friend of mine died of a heart attack on Christmas eve. On Christmas eve morning before we had finished work he had given me a piece of paper with this written on it:

Christmas is here and times are hard
So I'm giving you this paper instead of a card.
I think that cards are a bit of a farce
At least you can use the paper to wipe your .....

Have a good Christmas!

For those of you who might prefer to receive a more traditional Christmas greeting copy and paste the link below into your browser

Enjoy.

JC,

Re your techie query.

In my case it takes me to .co.uk but as I am based in the UK that is what I would expect although I also regularly log into the Ancestry.com for various reasons.

I think so Renes, last went there about 5 years ago visting all my old work places and not seeing anyone I knew. The first bank I work in had over 100 staff when I worked there looked like there was more like 10 last time I went in, never liked it when they bought in computers took all our jobs away and the fun out of it.

Ta FBG and Jonesey.

It's now doing it to me at the .CO.UK Criminal Records index, and I can't get out of the denial without logging in to .COM.

If it isn't one damned thing with one of these sites, it's another.

I see there seems to be yet another reason to stay away from Facebook? ;)
