How about a big portobello mushroom covered in olive oil, cooked in the oven then topped with a round of soft goats cheese - back in the oven for cheese to melt a little, then browned lightly under the grill - served on a bed of shredded lettuce.

We always enjoy that, although it can be a bit filling if the mushrooms are too big!

Finally car all packed. Couple of hours to kill before I'll be bobbing along on the crest of a wave. I hope it's not rough

Hope the roads are clear in Lancashire

Portobello mushrooms -- I forgot! They're included in the xmas day breakfast too, barbecued, probably also some red peppers.

How's that for vegetarian then?

Renes Report 21 Dec 2010 16:49

Gins

How about filo pastry parcels

You can get a pack of filo pastry -- butter all the sheets on top of one another --- add all diff fillings and maybe the odd prawn ( if they eat them )

put little piles on the complete sheets - then cut through all into squares

bring the corners together and squeeze - to make little ruffled top parcels

brush with butter and pop in oven until golden

simples !!!

Yes Toots, where bouts are you going in my neck of the woods?

Gins, the part that is needed is out of stock due to high demand! That's even though we are on the high priority list because of OH's health! Anyway, I went up the ladder and he held me steady and I think I have got all of the ice out now. Got wet with the escaping water though! Should be sorted if I just keep an eye on it.

Janey.....haven't seen you on FB lately...gorn orf it? Not potty about big mushrooms to be honest but Gins will probably like them.

Have heard from our Sylvs. She had a wonderful journey to her daughter's and MJ is 'growing like a weed' !! He likes his grandparents too which is helpful! She sends her love to you all.

Have finally got the tree up and am now going to tackle the cards.

Bucks Fizz (whatever that is!) will be most welcome. ;) Feel free to bring olives, too!

The mushrooms are for the non-meatatarians, you can have your back bacon, Cynthia. It isn't like bacon bacon, though; I believe you call our kind of regular bacon "streaky bacon". We don't have your kind, which is sort of halfway between peameal and streaky. Peameal/back bacon is a brined pork loin, really.

If you can't join us for xmas breakfast, feel free to come for Boxing Day brunch. My sister's out-laws bring the remains of their big Portuguese xmas eve repast (unfortunately, the smell of fish things sometimes makes me have to leave for a while), and we haul out the remains of our big xmas day repast, and there are nibbles and breads and cheeses and baked goods galore. And I think I'll throw in a big spinach dip with various crackers, including the cracked pepper & olive oil kind, yum. And beer and wine and what not. And of course puke salad again; and Mr. & Ms. Portuguese out-law both like it, refined as their tastes are. ;)

Then we play steal-the-prezzie, so if you come, be sure to bring a couple of cheap wrapped objects -- choccies go over well!

Oh right, stinking fishy stuff all over the place, and it's jellied salad you want put away from yuor sight!

Well, me and my puke salad and the other afficionados will sit in the family room, and the smelly fish afficionados can go help with the backyard barbecuing in the minus whatever weather we will likely be having. ;)

I did have to leave the dining room one year when some sort of seafood chowder got reheated. Talk about puke ...

Hi all

Going from Isle of Man to St Helens so i can cook my mums Christmas dinner. I know it's now in Merseyside but I was born in Lancashire and always consider myself a Lancashire Lass.

She has got carried away and there will be 12 on Christmas Day cos Toots is cooking it. Incidently that was my nickname when younger and my sis can't believe I use it as an email addy. But then again we use to call her Weed because she used to like Bill and Ben and Weed sat in the middle. She hated it. Bro is coming from Norway and I'm going to meet his girlfriend for the first time. I wonder if I will need to buy a hat soon:)

Renes like the Filo pastry idea.

Renes Report 21 Dec 2010 18:04

Toots

Have a safe crossing --- for goodness sake do not eat any of Janeys puke salad

You never know your brother may bring some nice Norwegian goodies - or maybe some giant Norwegian prawns

gorgeous

Have a great Christmas Toots

Renes

Thanks JC, I will take the mushroom and the breads and any olives if they are around

Toots, you have a safe journey and enjoy your Christmas....despite being a Red Rose ;)

Hmmmm....thinking on the ideas for the starter. I have bought some blinis and stuff so might figure out something with them...warm with cheese and olives maybe?
