re spell checker

when I was working at the Garden, I was asked to type up a listing of plants donated to us by a local nurseryman over a period of about 20 years ...... some he'd collected himself from China, Peru, etc, others that he'd arranged to be brought in with the intent of potentially introducing them to the local nursery trade.

His name was Piroche

My spell checker insisted that it was Pirate

That caused quite a giggle among those in the know because in fact he was more than a bit of a pirate!

Well, I thought it might be safe to look in by now, but nope, now I know of somebody else on Coronation Street who dies 10 months from now by my viewing schedule ...

Cheeses, guys, there might even be good Englanders who taped the thing and haven't watched it yet! Never heard of "spoilers", I guess?

I often chat on Chat about how No.1 and I are devoted Corrie watchers, but he won't watch EastEnders with me because he can't understand a word they say ...

Re the Ginger beer - Over 50 years ago, we used to make it !!

We had this 'great glob of brown mouldy fungussy stuff' which we kept under the sink and had to 'feed it' with sugar ???

That is what I remember anyway??

The end result was a lovely fizzy tasty ginger beer.

I don't know if it was alcoholic or not but we all drank it and it was very nice.

Does anyone know if and how you could make it nowadays??

I hate all these sweet fizzy drinks available nowadays.

Renes

Renes Report 10 Dec 2010 20:46

We also used to grow our own Ginger beer - the funky stuff used to have to be divided to start another bottle - I remember it be like sandy sticky gunk -

But I did love the drink - think I might Google to see if I can find out what exactly it was - we grew !

Edit - Making the Plant

The plant is a mixture of dried ginger, yeast, sugar and water. This creates a yeast culture.

In the jar, place one teaspoon of dried yeast, two teaspoons of dried ginger, four teaspoons of sugar and a pint (600ml) of cold water.

Stir and keep at room temperature.

Feed the plant every day with two teaspoons of dried ginger and four teaspoons of sugar. Stir after feeding.

The plant will be ready after one week.

Renes,

'Sandy sticky gunk' sounds just about right Renes - It was SO long ago and I didn't understand or remember what it really was.

Let me know if you find out as is really was very nice (in the end).

Janey, you will doubtless have forgotten all about last night's excitement on Corrie by next October! Don't worry about it.

Good job you never watched a series from a few years back called Brookside. That was set in Liverpool.........you would have had to have subtitles....lol

jax

jax Report 10 Dec 2010 21:04

How can he say he cant understand what they say on Eastenders?

Its the otherway around I would think, In the Daily Mail yesterday they said the first 7 years of Corrie they had to put up sub titles because us people down south could'nt understand what they were saying.

That link is quite interesting the alcoholic content is 9.9 percent abv

Someone in Saudi Arabia wanted to know as he was going to make some as he cannot buy alcohol there

Apparently the bottles can explode though - I thought as kids we just drank the mixture on top of the plant but apparently you boil up sugar and water and the add the plant minus the gunk - which you halve and start again

I think we had to put it in the 'strong' bottles with the 'marbles' as stoppers Renes??

I think a bit more research is called for here or we might 'explode' ??

Tee hee!
