Ordering certificates

Certificates can be ordered from the General Register Office. The General Register Office charges £9.25 per certificate. (Please note that the General Register Office is separate from Genes Reunited and Genes Reunited does not sell certificates). You can order a certificate of a birth, marriage, death or military death.

The General Registration index shows a district, volume number and page number next to your ancestor’s first and last name. If you wish to find out more about your ancestor’s birth, marriage or death, you can use this information to order a copy of the original certificate from the General Register Office, which is part of the Office of National Statistics.

The extra benefit of ordering a certificate is that birth records give both parents’ names. Marriage records give ages, names and occupations of both partners' fathers. Death certificates give ages and after 1969 also give the place of birth. There is also some helpful information here on the benefits of ordering a certificate.
